This may interest anybody (anywhere) who is interested in getting bike
trails established.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT - BIKEABILITY TOOL KIT Join the CBUG Bikeability
Campaign. Dear People,

The Bicycle Federation of Australia has researched a project funded by the
Australian Greenhouse Office and the Cycling Promotion Fund, whereby
engineers, planners, elected representatives, advocacy groups and cyclists
can be more effective. The bikeability toolkit is a resource that can be
used for many reasons but most importantly, raising the quality of
our bike routes. As you all know Cairns has always been a cycling city,
but the challenges of population growth, traffic increase and additional
costs, require that we take a fresh look at the kind of vision we want for
Cairns.

To become familiar with how the bikeability toolkit works, we suggest that
you try it out:-

We would like to encourage everyone to have a go at using this tool to
enhance their understanding of cycling issues and to help CBUG represent
the cyclists of Cairns more effectively. Here are a few simple steps:-

1. Go to the bikeability web site
http://www.travelsmart.gov.au/bikeability/index.html .
2. Click on Route Based Checklist.
3. Print or Save to your computer.
4. Print and study the questions.
5. Select a bike route from home to your most travelled destination, even
if it is just to the corner store or for a longer trip to work, school,
recreation or cycle training.
6. Ride the bike route and make notes and take photos as you go.
7. Then fill in the questions on the checklist.
8. Send copies to your local bike group, the Council/County, Main Roads,
your elected representative etc, and keep a copy for reference.

Even if you think this is too difficult, have a go just the same. You may
be surprised that it's not as hard as you think. We have nothing to lose
and everything to gain.
